We all know the Spanish people can throw a PARTY! And “Carnaval” is no exception, but did you ever wonder why Carnaval is so popular in Spain?
You may think, as Carnaval is to start Lent that their religious background makes this event so popular… But the main reason the Spanish people have to celebrate this festival dates back to the Franco regime.
Masks that conceal your face were seen as plots against the state and Carnaval was banned!
Nowadays children, adults & groups fill the streets to celebrate their freedom and to express themselves without fear or punishment and they dress up in some of the most colourful and exaggerated outfits they can find.
The impressive First Prize for best Carnaval outfit can be up to 600€ in some towns, which may also contribute to all the enthusiasm.
This truly energetic fiesta is not one to miss and if you intend to join in on the fun, don’t hold back!
