Shining a light on Diabetes in Mallorca
World Diabetes Day, introduced by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 1991 to raise global awareness of the condition, will take place on November 14. The IDF has launched the Blue Monument Challenge, to literally shine a light on diabetes and encourages individuals and businesses to offer advice, information and testing to detect and treat diabetes.
Specsavers Opticas in Santa Ponça will be lighting their premises in blue for the week of the 14th of November and providing information and free eye tests in store. They are also collaborating with the Calvia Lions Club to hold a Diabetic Testing on Saturday 10th of November from 10.00am to 12:00pm. This is open to all, free of charge and no appointment is necessary. During the event, qualified nurse Rina Quinn will be conducting a simple finger prick test to detect the signs of diabetes. Results will be given immediately and if positive, patients will be referred for medical advice. This type of screening can detect pre-diabetes and diabetes.
“Over 425 million people are currently living with diabetes, thankfully most is well controlled, so the condition doesn’t affect the eyes, but each store will usually see two to three diabetes suffers with diabetic retinopathy each year who do require medical intervention”, commented Martin Blake from Specsavers Opticas Santa Ponça. “The good news is that early diagnosis, a healthy lifestyle and the right treatment can stop blindness through diabetes. Knowledge is power with this kind of condition, so we’re organizing a free diabetes testing event on the 10th of November and are offering free eye tests and information in store.”
Specsavers Opticas offer advanced eye tests using a digital retinal camera, allowing the optician to take a detailed picture of the back of the eye. These comprehensive eye tests are able to detect the signs of Diabetic retinopathy. If these signs are identified during an eye test, patients are referred to a doctor for further tests and treatment. Please come along to Specsavers Opticas Santa Ponça, Avda Rei Jaume 1, 117, Locales 14 y 15 on Saturday 10th of November for your free diabetes test and to have your eyes checked.
