Five fab facts about Dolly
Written by John K on August 18, 2017
Well known and loved actress, singer, songwriter and businesswoman Dolly Parton has achieved so much in her career although to date not a UK number one.
Her awe-inspiring career spans four decades and during that time she has wow’ed us with heartfelt ballads like Jolene, Islands in the Stream, Coat of Many Colours and of course 9 to 5 which was the theme tune to an iconic movie starring Dolly, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Here are five fab facts about our beloved Dolly.
- She has penned more than 3,000 songs
- Her first big crush was Johhny Cash
- 9 to 5 never charted in the UK top 40
- Dolly is godmother to Miley Cyrus
- Her famous wigs are worn because she has fine hair
Dolly’s tunes that span the decades still pull people onto the dancefloor and most of us know the words to at least four or five of them. Pentatonix re-mixed Jolene in 2016 which earnt her an eighth Grammy.
She started her road to stardom releasing Hello, I’m Dolly in 1966 and she stunned audiences with her tiny frame and blonde wigs and dulcet country tones.
Her first big crush was Jonny Cash but she married her sweetheart in 1966 and has been married for 50 years to husband Carl who shuns the spotlight. She has sung many songs about heartbreak and blues but her stable relationship doesn’t reflect that.
One of her most iconic and well-known records was ‘I Will Always Love you’ taken to new heights by Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard. Dolly’s version is a gentle and sweet love song. Although 9 to 5 won two Grammy’s it didn’t chart in the UK Top 40 surprisingly.
Dolly has written several children’s books and founded Imagination Library that donates books to under privileged schoolchildren. She has her own theme park too! Dollywood is one of the biggest employers in her home town and boasts a theme park and resort hotel.
So, tell us knowing Dolly as you do, what is your favourite song? We love too many to pick a favourite but as I am writing this article what should I hear drifting from one of the neighbouring buildings….Jolene!
